Flirting Mazurkas August 16th

Pizza and Jam night was quite an event with everything from Mike and Harry - tuba and tenor sax duet, rocka and roll and Jazz's first public solo performance.

This Sunday afternoon (July 27) a book launch with Olympics gold medallist Lauren Burns and then next month it's the Flirting Mazurkas Saturday August 16th. Rated by a number of Cockatoo regulars as their favourite entertainers. These are three musicians we really respect for their talent and passion.

Fiddle player Ernie was part of the duo that entertained at Mike and Bev Hartwig's wedding in the café a couple of years ago, plus some people might have seen him as a member of Jugularity when they performed here in 1999. Great musician and comedian. Jen is the singer and guitarist you might have met when Continental Drift played here a year before that. Wonderful voice and very lively style. Finally there's Phil Carroll who we have had more of a sort of distant relationship with - lots of stories about him from Anton (fiddle player and long time friend) who also was/is a member of Continental Drift, plus we followed Phil's directions on our Turkey trip in search of a ney (a Turkish flute). No doubt you'll hear Phil play the ney at the Cocky next month. More info on the back of this page.

There is a $10 music fee and bookings are essential. It's not far away time wise, so if you are keen to come let us know fast. As usual meals are served before and between entertainment. A range of wines and beers is available. Suggested arrival time around is 7.00PM. These evenings tend to fill rather rapidly so don't delay booking in, and if for any reason you do need to cancel a booking please let us know asap because we are a very small venue, the musicians need the money and we usually have a waiting list of people ready to come, even at the last minute.

The Flirting Mazurkas is a versatile trio based on the skills and charms of three of Melbourne's busiest musicians. They play their favorite and most requested songs and tunes, from years of experience playing at weddings, parties and restaurants. The gorgeous Jennifer Hawley sings and plays guitar, the debonnaire Phil Carroll plays accordion and sings backing vocals, and the passionate Ernie Gruner fiddles and percusses. They feature favourites and oddities in the style of European café music including Jazz, Gypsy, Klezmer, French, Latin, Italian, Tango and more. If you ask for it nicely you can even have a Polish Mazurka. These songs and tunes are all cleverly arranged to produce an atmosphere for flirting and dancing, if it is legal. The band holds no responsibility for who flirts with who!

JENNIFER HAWLEY - vocals, guitar Jennifer has been playing in bands in both Melbourne and Sydney for the past fifteen years and has established a fine reputation as a guitarist, singer and composer. Previously a member of the gypsy jazz group, Continental Drift, she now works with Siren, Flirting Mazurkas, Parisienne Swing and Ruby and Ginger. Phil has been involved in World Music playing with Indiginy Music Ensemble full-time at Ayers Rock Resort for 18 months. He leads the Middle-Eastern music and dance ensemble Yalla! and plays with Klezmeritis. He also plays in Gypsy Nights with Ernie Gruner which played for a year at the Block Arcade, and regularly plays for food and wine events and other celebrations. He also plays with French, Latin, jazz, gypsy and continental groups. He has composed music for films, documentaries, music ensembles and dancers.

ERNIE GRUNER - violin, percussion, vocals Ernie Gruner is a violinist who is most active in the world music, jazz and improvising areas. He specialises in klezmer, leads Klezmeritis and travelled to New York, Budapest and Berlin in 1998 to study this East European Jewish music. He also plays with Yalla! playing traditional Arabic and Turkish dance music. As a member of Melbourne Playback Theatre he enjoys improvising music to stories. Ernie has played at most major Australian festivals with Jugularity for over 12 years - a mix of folk/world, jazz, blues, rap, country and comedy cabaret. With Flirting Mazurkas and Gypsy Nights he plays a mix of jazz, latin and gypsy café music.
