Cycling advice
The Dunolly Cycle Tracks follow a mix of unmade forest roads, unmade minor roads and a short amount of sealed highway. Mountain bikes or hybrids are advised. You can expect very little traffic on the forest tracks but normal precautions should always taken as these tracks and roads are shared by occasional motor traffic.Condion of the track surfaces will vary with weather conditions and maintenance, although a freshly graded surface can sometimes be less friendly for a cyclist especially after rain. In addition to the signed tracks there are many minor roads in the area suitable for exploring on a bicycle. Some locations such as the Bealiba range offer quite challenging rides. It's important to realise that the tracks are mostly signposted in only one direction. Signs may not be clearly visible in the reverse direction. Cycle spares are available in the region from Castlemaine, Bendigo and Ballarat but shops are unlikley to be open Saturday afternoon or Sunday so it is wise to carry the usual spares including spare tubes and cables. Mobile phone reception is quite reasonable with a Telstra tower at Dunolly and at Mt Moliagul. |
